TAEKWON-DO TIGERS

At Master Howard’s Dojang (Cabra)

Information for Parents

What is ‘Taekwon-Do Tigers’?

Taekwon-Do Tigers is a specially designed Taekwon-Do programme for children between the ages of 6 to 8 years. Its purpose is to teach children; basic self-defence, fitness, courtesy, and respect for their parents and teachers, in a safe and fun environment. Its aim is to develop the children both physically and mentally and prepare them to learn the more formal Taekwon-Do syllabus when they get older.

The Tigers programme we teach continually evolves to introduce our younger students to the principals, core values and techniques used in Taekwon-Do in a way that is easier for them to understand. One example is that as adults we understand that bowing to a training partner is a sign of respect. For a younger member, a student will bow as part of the syllabus but we introduced a handshake as a mark of respect to underpin the requirement to respect your training partners and the part they play in your development by agreeing to train with you.

In Taekwon-Do while there is a personal development component, you rely on your training partners throughout your Taekwon-Do journey to assist your development and growth. This co-operative approach is fostered at an early age in training and continues for the whole Taekwon-Do journey.

Taekwon-Do is an inclusive martial art and draws no distinction on age, race, colour, gender or religious belief. While training in Grandmaster Howards Dojang(s), it is expected that all registered students follow those principals. When we train we are all considered to be students and there to learn.

We are very proud to say, that we have over the past number of years that we have attracted a lot more female students, students from different countries, students of different religious beliefs and students of all ages. When in the Dojang we expect all students irrespective of age to follow the syllabus and respect the principals that are required in our martial art.

While this is a well-established programme parents may have questions or require clarification on the syllabus. We would encourage you to contact us prior to registration if you have questions.

Once in the Dojang we expect all students to partake in the training as instructed so we prefer that the parents of any potential students be fully aware of our expectations for the students before registration.

We look forward to your continued co-operation and to teaching all future Taekwon-Do students.

Goals

The Taekwon-Do Tigers goals are to; be polite, be respectful, always tell the truth, try my best, never give up.

Parental Presence

Please Note: This is not a drop off service.

It is important that the children have a safe environment to train and learn. The Taekwon-Do school has a policy of compulsory parental (or guardian) presence during the Friday classes.  It is not possible to just drop off your child. If you wish you child to enrol in the school you (or another adult) will need to be present at all the classes. I hope you appreciate that this policy is for the welfare of your children.

Your presence at classes will also help you to practice with your child at home and encourage them to train and study.

Drinks and Healthy eating

The training sessions are for approximately 55 minutes and most children will not need a drink during the class. But they can bring a bottle of water if they wish.  Please note that as part of our healthy eating programme fizzy drinks, energy drinks, and junk food are not allowed in the dojang (training hall).

What to Wear

Loose fitting clothes such as a t-shirt, track suit pants or shorts are ideal.  The children will be training in their bare feet.
Doboks – (White Suits).  It is not necessary to get a dobok until January. It is probably best to see if your child likes the classes before buying the suit. The doboks we wear are specific to our association and can be purchased (approx €40) through the Taekwon-Do school.

Belts, Gradings and Assessments

This is a development programme for children and as such a new assessment and belt system has been developed.  The children will train towards three goals a year. The first is a demonstration in December, the second is a fun competition in March, and the final is a grading in May (where they will be assessed for a new tag for their white belts).  The overall goal is development and as such there is minimum emphasis on formal assessment (like primary school).  When they reach age 9 they will progress to the Dragons programme (9-11 years) where they have a more formal belt system.

Republic of Ireland Taekwon-Do Association (RITA)

Master Howard’s Dojang is part of the national governing body of Taekwon-Do in Ireland (the RITA).  All junior members must pay an annual association fee of €33.  However as an introductory offer Master Howard’s Dojang will pay this fee on your behalf for the first year.
